Australia does not have these and is worse off for it.
We are sitting in the town square of Gambassi Terme ( having a beer).
It is not a touristy square like we showed you in Lucca. Everyone but us seems to be local. There are teenagers and twenty something's hanging out. There are also young families with toddlers excitedly exploring their surroundings. A seven year old was studying the teenagers and there are fifty something couples and sixty something small groups of men. Lastly there are seventy something men and women ( some with walking frames) chatting.
There seems to be one bar and they maintain two five metre square gazebos. The owner just replaced our cushions with new ones for the summer.
In Europe eating is done outside in Summer wherever possible and this square may well be busy untill late.
